Florence Nightingale, also known as the Lady with the Lamp was born on 12th May, 1820 in Florence Italy and died on 13 August 1910 in London, United Kingdom. She got the name Florence from the name of city Florence,Italy. She was a great social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. She established St. Thomas’ Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860. In the 19 and 20 century she made her best efforts to make to reform health care system.

Her father name was William Shore Nightingale and mother name was Frances Nightingale. Her father was a wealthy landowner who had two estates, one in Derbyshire and other at Hampshire. Her mother belong to family of merchants and had interest in social standing. But Florence had no interest in social standing and avoided the centre of attention. At one of her family estate, Leu hurst she studied different languages such as German, Italian and French. At the very young age she was found to be interested helping the ill and poor people of the village. Eventually Nightingale enrolled as a nursing student in 1850 at the Institution of Protestant Deaconesses in Kaiserswerth, Germany but before enrolling to nursing student when she told her parents they were not happy.

Nightingale made it her mission to improve hygienic practices which resulted in lowering the death rate significantly. In late 1854 she was asked by Secretary of Sydney Herbert to organize a corps of nurses for the sick and fallen soldiers in the crimea. Queen Victoria had awarded her a prize of $250000 from the British Government. At the age of 38, she was homebound and bedridden but she did not give up. She worked fiercely improving health care from her bed.
